Best email marketing platform for digital product sellers: Kit vs beehiiv vs Systeme.io

If you sell digital products, your email list does three jobs: it delivers freebies, it welcomes new subscribers with an automated sequence, and it tells past buyers about new products. Most email platforms can do all three. The differences are in what’s free, what needs a paid plan, and how much each one cares about selling products versus publishing a newsletter.
This guide compares three platforms that are popular with digital product sellers: Kit (formerly ConvertKit), beehiiv and Systeme.io.
How we compared them: all prices, limits and fees below come from each company’s own pricing pages and help documents, checked in October 2026. We haven’t run identical test campaigns across the three, so there are no deliverability or open-rate claims here. Those depend far more on your list and content than on the platform.
The quick answer
- Choose Kit if email is central to your business, you want an email-first tool with a large free tier, and you’re happy to pay for automations when you need them.
- Choose beehiiv if you’re building a newsletter first (content, growth, maybe sponsorships later) and products are a side income.
- Choose Systeme.io if you want email, sales pages, checkout and file delivery in one free account, and you’re happy with simpler email tools.

Kit (formerly ConvertKit)
Kit is an email platform built for creators: writers, course creators, and people selling digital products.
What the free plan gives you
Kit’s pricing page currently lists the free plan at up to 10,000 subscribers, with unlimited landing pages and forms, unlimited email broadcasts, audience tagging and segmentation, and the ability to sell digital products and subscriptions. That’s a large free tier. It’s more than double beehiiv’s and five times Systeme.io’s contact limit.
Kit also lists “deliver opt-in incentives” (sending a freebie automatically when someone signs up), which covers the basic lead magnet job.
What you pay for
The Creator plan is where automation lives. Kit lists unlimited visual automations and unlimited email sequences under Creator, along with removing Kit branding, A/B testing subject lines, RSS campaigns and integrations. At 1,000 subscribers, Creator is US$33/month billed yearly (US$390/year); monthly billing costs more (Kit advertises 17% savings for paying yearly). The Pro plan adds engagement scoring, deliverability reporting and a newsletter referral system. It was listed at US$66/month billed yearly at 1,000 subscribers, with a first-year discount (US$50/month) running when we checked.
Selling products on Kit
Kit’s pricing page lists a fee of 3.5% + 30c per digital product or subscription sale on every plan. Kit describes that as inclusive of credit card processing. So unlike the other two, you don’t pay Stripe on top. On an A$15 sale that’s about A$0.83 in fees (assuming the 30c is charged in your sale currency; check how Kit applies it to AUD sales).
Who Kit suits
Sellers who think of themselves as running an email list, and who want a dedicated, well-known email tool. The big free tier means you can collect subscribers for a long time before paying, but plan on Creator once you want automated welcome or post-purchase sequences. → See Kit’s plans
beehiiv
beehiiv is a newsletter platform. Its tools centre on publishing (a website and post archive), growth (referral programs, a recommendation network) and monetisation (an ad network, paid subscriptions, sponsorships).
What the free plan gives you
beehiiv’s free plan covers up to 2,500 subscribers with unlimited email sends, a hosted website, subscribe forms, the recommendation network and campaign analytics. It’s a solid free newsletter setup.
What’s missing for a product seller: email automations aren’t on the free plan (beehiiv’s comparison table starts them at Lite, with 10 live automations). Some newsletter features you might expect, such as A/B testing and publishing to segments, also start at Lite.
On digital products, beehiiv’s pricing table lists one product on Free, but its own product update notes say digital products are available on paid plans. If selling on free matters to you, confirm in your account before relying on it.
What you pay for
- Lite: US$59/month on monthly billing, or US$49/month billed yearly (US$588/year), for up to 1,000 subscribers. Adds automations, digital products (3 products), paid subscriptions, the ad network and A/B testing.
- Pro: US$109/month monthly, or US$95/month billed yearly, at up to 1,000 subscribers. Adds unlimited products, removes beehiiv branding, and adds dynamic content and click-triggered automations.
Prices climb with your list: Lite is US$79/month (monthly billing) at 2,500 subscribers and US$109/month at 5,000.
Selling products on beehiiv
beehiiv says it takes 0% commission on digital product and paid subscription revenue; you pay Stripe’s processing fees. For Australian sellers, Stripe’s published rate is 1.65% + A$0.30 for domestic cards and 3.5% + A$0.30 for international cards.
Who beehiiv suits
People whose main product is the newsletter itself, especially if you might earn from sponsors or the ad network later. If your business is mostly selling printables and templates, you’ll be paying for publishing and growth tools you may not use. → See beehiiv’s plans
Systeme.io
Systeme.io isn’t primarily an email platform. It’s an all-in-one tool for sales funnels, email, courses, a blog and checkout. That’s exactly why it appeals to digital product sellers.
What the free plan gives you
Up to 2,000 contacts, unlimited email sends, 3 sales funnels, 1 course, 1 blog, 1 custom domain and 0% transaction fees. The constraint is automation: the free plan includes 1 automation rule and 1 email campaign (Systeme.io’s name for an automated sequence).
For a small seller, one campaign is usually your welcome-plus-offer sequence. One rule is usually “tag buyers”. That’s a workable minimum.
What you pay for
Startup is US$17/month for 5,000 contacts, 10 funnels and 5 courses, with higher automation limits. Webinar (US$47) and Unlimited (US$97) raise the limits further. Every plan keeps unlimited sends and 0% transaction fees. See our full Systeme.io review for the details.
Who Systeme.io suits
Sellers who want one place to collect emails, sell, deliver files and email buyers, without paying monthly. The email editor and reporting are simpler than a dedicated platform’s, but the whole path from freebie to purchase lives in one account. → See Systeme.io’s plans
What it costs at 1,000 subscribers with automations
Most sellers want an automated welcome sequence. Here’s the cheapest way to get one on each platform at about 1,000 subscribers, using list prices from October 2026:
| Platform | Cheapest plan with automated sequences | Cost per year (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Systeme.io | Free (1 campaign, 1 rule) | $0 |
| Systeme.io | Startup (more campaigns and rules) | $204 on monthly billing, less on annual |
| Kit | Creator, billed yearly | $390 |
| beehiiv | Lite, billed yearly | $588 |
That table favours Systeme.io on price, but price isn’t the whole story. Kit and beehiiv are specialist email and newsletter tools with more depth in their own areas, and Kit’s free plan holds five times as many subscribers before you pay anything (just without automations).
How to choose: three questions
1. What is the list for? If the list exists to sell products, Systeme.io or Kit. If the list is the product (a newsletter you’ll grow and monetise), beehiiv or Kit.
2. Do you need automations now? If yes and budget is tight, Systeme.io’s free plan is the only one of the three with automated sequences at $0. If you can wait, Kit’s free plan lets you build a large list first and add automations later.
3. How many tools do you want to manage? If you already have a store (Etsy, Payhip, Podia), a dedicated email tool like Kit plugs in alongside it. If you have nothing yet, Systeme.io replaces several tools at once.
Other options we didn’t cover in depth
- GetResponse: a long-established email platform with automation and webinar features. Worth comparing if you want webinars bundled with email.
- Your store’s built-in email. Podia includes email for 100 to 1,000 subscribers depending on plan, and Payhip has basic email features. Fine for occasional updates; limited for sequences.
Moving later is possible
All three let you export your subscriber list, so your choice isn’t permanent. What doesn’t move easily is the setup: automations, forms and templates have to be rebuilt. If you’re unsure, start with the one that matches how you want to work now, and keep your list clean (tag buyers vs freebie subscribers) so it’s easy to take with you.
Before you choose: prices and free-plan limits on email platforms change often. Everything above was checked on each vendor’s website in October 2026. Confirm on the pricing page before you sign up.
